The Dhow Space, 2018
Client: Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai
The Arab Dhow is one of the world's most beautiful sailing boats. The Emirates' were famous for the prowess of their sailors and the sleek lines of their vessels. When pearling was at its climax, the most important manufacturing industry in the region was boat-building.
Today, traditional boatyards in the UAE nurture this tradition, using the same primary materials and tools to fashion various crafts, including furniture and interior fixtures. Shell construction, involving the fitting of planks and ribs, is typical in dhow construction.
The Dhows' traditional use of wood and building methodologies inspired the design of gallery, library, and cafe spaces. The project is located inside a high-traffic corridor within the Dubai Airport to educate visitors about Dubai's heritage.
